The advent of World War 1 saw two new dimensions being added to warfare one of air and other of under water. But probably the most important element to be put to use for war in the century was the use of radio waves and the associated electronics. They were used first in radio communication and later on in the fields of radar. Under the stimulus of war, technology advanced rapidly and new systems provided greater ranges, greater precision and greater capacity. It was a shock to the designers who discovered that the capable enemy has denied the use of their electronic gadgets.
The importance of electronic gadgets in the battle leads to a never ending race in this field. G. M this brings me to the topic of my today’s presentation I. E. “Electronic Warfare”. 2. ; in next 20 minutes or so I will be talking about the NEW. As per the sequence of my presentation flashed before you, I would first Like to go through definition of NEW which also includes Electromagnetic Environment (ME) and Operational Environment. DEFINITION 3. ; the text book definition of NEW is flashed in front of you. Electronic Warfare is defined as a military action involving the use of electromagnetic energy to determine, exploit, reduce or prevent hostile use of electromagnetic spectrum and actions which retain friendly use of the electromagnetic spectrum”. 4. Electronic Warfare (NEW) has the fastest growth trend compared to any other military system and is one of the key elements of the modern battle scenario, protecting one’s own forces from attack, denying information to the enemy and intercepting and disrupting an enemy’s voice communication and data links.
In effect, is a continuing war between active systems that ‘attack’ and defensive systems which ‘protect’. The basic concept of NEW Is o exploit the enemy’s electromagnetic emission In all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. THE ELECTROMAGNETIC ENVIRONMENT (MME) 5. Military operations are executed in an information environment and increasingly complicated by the electromagnetic (ME) spectrum. The electromagnetic spectrum portion of the information environment is referred to as the electromagnetic environment (MME).
The recognized need for military forces to have unrestricted access to and use of the electromagnetic environment creates vulnerabilities and opportunities for electronic warfare () In support of military operations. The information operations construct, is an element of information warfare. OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS 6. An operational environment includes physical ?the air, land, maritime, and space domains.
It also includes the information that shapes the operational environment as well as enemy and friendly systems relevant to an operation. Military planners analyze operational environments In terms of six Interrelated operational these variables Military doctrine adds two more: physical environment and time. Military leaders use operational variables to understand and analyze the broad environment in which they are conducting operations. 7.
Upon receipt of a warning order or mission, Military tactical leaders narrow their focus to six mission variables, which are, enemy, terrain and weather, troops and support available, time available and civil considerations. The mission variables outline the situation. Commanders employ and integrate their capabilities and actions within their operational environment to achieve a desired end state. During military operations, the flow of information depends on the electronic systems and devices used to communicate, navigate, sense, store, and process information.
