What DSL technology provides equal bandwidth in both directions?
SDSL
What two standards have been established for wiring twisted-pair cabling and RJ-45 connectors?
T568A and T568B
What two terms describe the type of network cable that is used for connecting a computer to a switch or other network device?
straight-through cable and
patch cable
In the T568B wiring scheme, what two color pairs are used for transmit and receive on a 100BaseT network?
White/green, green and
White/orange, orange
What two commands are used to display TCP/IP configuration on Windows and Unix / Linux / Mac OS X operating systems, respectively?
ipconfig and
ifconfig
What two different types of coaxial cable have been used for cable TV?
-RG-6
-RG-59
broadband
a networking technology that carries more than one type of signal
throughput
the average of the actual speed of a network
ferrite clamp
a device that helps to eliminate electromagnetic interference (EMI)
latency
delays in network transmission
fast Ethernet
operates at 100 Mbps and uses STP or UTP cabling, rated CAT-5 or higher
patch cable
used to connect a computer to a switch or other network device
shielded twisted pair (STP) cable
uses a covering or shield around wire pairs
switch
a device that keeps a table of MAC addresses to port mappings
repeater
a device that amplifies and retransmits signal to a wider coverage area
DSL
uses ordinary copper phone lines and a range of frequencies on the copper wire to provide Internet
What consideration should be taken for Ethernet cables that are installed in plenum areas?
Normally, the plastic covering of a cable is made of pVC (polyvinyl chloride), which is not safe when used inside plenums (areas between the floors of buildings). In these situations, plenum cable covered with Teflon is used because it does not give off toxic fumes when burned. Plenum cable is two or three times more expensive than PVC.
Describe a WAN and give an example of a WAN.
A WAN (wide area network) covers a large geographical area and is made up of many smaller networks. The best-known WAN is the Internet. Some technologies used to connect a single computer or LAN to the Internet include DSL, cable Internet, satellite, cellular WAN, and fiber optic.
What is the difference between bandwidth and throughput?
Bandwidth is the theoretical number of bits that can be transmitted over a network at one time, similar to the number of lanes on a highway. Bandwidth is the theoretical or potential speed of a network, whereas data throughput is the average of the actual speed.
*****What are some of the considerations when deciding between cable Internet and DSL? Describe two.
With cable Internet, you share the TV cable infrastructure with your neighbors, which can result in service becoming degraded if many people in your neighborhood are using cable Internet at the same time.
What is Power over Ethernet and how might you use it?
PoE is a feature that might be available on high-end wired network adapters that allows power to be transmitted over Ethernet cable to remote devices.
What are the differences between a hub and a switch?

An Ethernet hub transmits the data frame to every device, except the device that sent the frame. A hub is just a pass-through and distribution point for every device connected to it, without regard for what kind of data is passing through and where the data might be going. Hubs are outdated technology, having been replaced by switches.

Whereas, A switch is smarter and more efficient than a hub because it keeps a table of all the MAC addresses for devices connected to it. When the switch receives a frame, it searches its MAC address table for the destination MAC address of the frame and sends the frame only to the device or interface using this MAC address. At first, a switch does not know the MAC addresses of every device connected to it. It learns this information as it receives frames and records the source MAC addresses in its MAC address table. When it receives a frame destined to a MAC address not in its table, the switch acts like a hub and broadcasts the frame to all devices except the one that sent it.

What is fiber optic cabling and what are the two types of fiber-optic cable?
Fiber optic cabling transmits signals as pulses of light over glass or plastic strands inside protected tubing and comes in two types: single-mode (thin, difficult to connect, expensive, and best performing) and multimode (most popular).
Compare a straight-through cable with a crossover cable.
A straight-through cable is an Ethernet cable used to connect a computer to a switch or other network device. And, a crossover cable is used to connect two like devices such as a hub to a hub or a computer to a computer (to make the simplest network of all). A crossover cable is not rated for Gigabit Ethernet.
What does the ping command do?
A ping (Packet InterNet Groper) is a TCP/IP command used to troubleshoot network connections. It verifies that the host can communicate with another host on the network.
What is the nslookup command, and what does it do?
Namespace lookup (nslookup) is a TCP/IP command that lets you read information from the Internet namespace by requesting information about domain name resolutions from the DNS server’s zone data.
