internet
a world wide collection of millions of computers and networks of all sizes. It is a network of networks
ARPANET
the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, a project started in 1969 by the US department of defense, which was the beginning of the internet.
internet backbone
a foundation network linked with fiber-optic cables that can support very high bandwidth. It is made up of many interconnected government, commercial, academic and other high capacity routers
hypermedia
documents include embedded references to audio, text, images, video, and other documents
hypertext
the embedded references in hypermedia; consist of links users can click to follow a particular thread object
web server
any computer that stores hypermedia documents and makes them available to other computers over the internet is called a server.
IP
Internet protocol address assigned by ICANN.
DNS
domain name system- the process of converting domain names to ip addresses when info is transferred from one network to another. Servers using this protocol maintain a list of computers and web site’s addresses and their associated IPs
URLs
Uniform resource locators, identify a web page. this represents the address of the document or site on the internet
HTML
Hypertext markup language is the language used to create webpages. It defines a page’s layout and appearance by using tags and attributes. A tag denotes a section of the page, such as header or body; an attribute species a value, such as font color.

used to travel from website to website.

google, an information system that enables users to retrieve data from the web by using search terms

indexes of information based on keywords embedded in documents, which make it possible for search engines to find what you are looking for.

Voice over internet protocol is the protocol used for internet telephony, or the process of using the internet instead of the telephone network to exchange spoken communication

network within an organization that uses internet protocols and technologies for collecting, storing, and disseminating useful information that supports business activities
extranet
secure network that uses the internet to connect intranets of business partners so communications between organizations or between consumers is possible

refers to the trend toward web applications that are more interactive than tradition. Collaboration is one of the key components.

a journal or newsletter that is updated frequently and intended for the general public. blogs reflect their authors personalities and often include philosophical reflections and opinions on social or political issues

type of website that allows users to add, delete, and modify content

refers to the demilitarized zone, an area of a network that is separate from the organizations LAN, where the extranet server is placed

Really Simple Syndication feeds are fast, wast way to distribute web content in CML format. It is a subscription service, new content from web sites you have selected is delivered via a feed reader to one convenient spot.
Podcast
an electronic audio file, such as MP# file, that is posted on the web for users to download to their mobile devices.

a collaborative effort involving more than 200 universities and corporations to develop advanced internet technologies and applications for higher ed and research.
gigapop
a local connection point of presence that connects a variety of high performance networks. it’s main function is the exchange of I2 traffic.
IoE
The internet of Everything refers to a web based development in which people. processes, data, and things are interconnected via the internet using various means.
IoT
Internet of things refers to the physical objects that are connected to the internet, and, therefor, to all other physical objects.
